All ready for canning apple sauce

It’s been a busy few weeks, so sorry for the lack of posts!

2 weekends ago, we went apple picking at Miller’s Apple Hill, a local apple orchard.  It was a cloudy, chilly day…perfect for apple picking!

We ended up picking 1 bushel of apples.  McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Empires and Jonagolds. We found that while the McIntoshes were too tart for making applesauce, Golden Delicious were perfect for making applesauce.  Anything is good for making apple pie…just add some sugar to the apples that are more tart.

We ended up canning about 12 jars of applesauce!

Of course, I also made 2 Apple Pies.  You didn’t think that I was going to go apple picking and not make a dessert, right?  🙂  I made one with a double crust and another with a single crust + lattice top.  It was a hit and everyone loved it!  I used the pie crust recipe from Smitten Kitchen.  Thanks Smitten Kitchen!
